Sim J. Singh Attariwala, who serves as the Director of the Anti-Hate Program at Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), has been appointed as a Commissioner on the District of Columbia Human Rights Commission, marking a significant milestone for Sikh American representation in public service.

His appointment, made by Mayor Muriel Bowser and subsequently approved by the DC Council, places him among the first Sikh Americans to serve on the influential commission responsible for upholding some of the nation’s strongest civil rights protections.

Reflecting on the importance of the role, Attariwala emphasized that the Commission plays a crucial part in ensuring equality and justice.
“The Commission safeguards one of the strongest civil rights laws in the country. Its work is a reminder that dignity, fairness, and equal protection must remain at the center of public life,” he said.

He further noted his commitment to advancing human rights in the nation’s capital.
“I look forward to contributing my experience in civil rights, anti-hate advocacy, and community engagement to help strengthen these protections for all who call the District home.”

Before joining AAJC, Attariwala led the U.S. Department of Justice’s Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, where he worked closely with the White House and multiple federal agencies to expand access to justice, combat hate crimes, and address issues of religious discrimination.

Attariwala brings with him an extensive academic background, holding an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center, and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Management from Florida International University.

The Sikh Coalition, a prominent community advocacy organization, welcomed his appointment, stating:
“We congratulate Sim J. Singh Attariwala on his appointment and confirmation as a Commissioner on the District of Columbia Human Rights Commission.”

They added that his selection highlights the growing leadership and visibility of Sikh Americans in government and civil rights work.
